Madison has several registered historic sites and districts. The Academy Street Historic District includes 12 historic buildings dating from 1824 to the early 20th Century. The Antebellum Office of lawyer, North Carolina Governor and Civil War hero Alfred Moore Scales is preserved in downtown Madison.
