Termite Treatment

Termite Treatment

Termites are the most destructive pests to property in North Carolina and Virginia. In our area, underground, or subterranean termites are the most destructive of all termites. Subterranean termites colonize in the wild near wood food sources like trees, fallen timber, and stumps. While they live and breed underground, termite colonies will move above ground into residential and commercial structures to get to wooden food sources. Several colonies might occupy an acre of land, and number into the millions. They will forage hundreds of feet in search of wood above ground.

Termites colonies are highly structured, and when termites form a new colony near an above-ground food source, they intend to make their new colony permanent. A new colony will have a new queen, which will lay thousands of eggs to grow the population. A colony’s new queen will lay eggs for approximately five years, creating groups of termites that will then colonize nearby close to the food source.

Termite Treatments and Prevention
Any home or commercial building that has termite infestation needs immediate treatment to eliminate the issue. Structural remediation and repairs may also be necessary, depending upon the level of damage already caused. Most importantly, every structure needs professional on-going treatment to prevent any future termite infestation. Call Cook’s Pest Management today if you suspect you have a termite issue.

Termites eat wood and all types of paper or wood-based products. Professional termite treatment will include removal of wood or paper touching soil. Termites are drawn to moisture as well, and your property may need drainage remediation to keep moisture away from the crawl space under your buildings. Preventative treatment also involves an insecticide barrier in the soil under your building along its foundation.

Other termite treatments include professional sanitation and chemical treatment of soil, wood, and foundations. These treatments can also include termite baiting and monitoring systems. Baiting systems prevent future termite colonization by chemical restriction and poisoning of the termites before they colonize near your building.

Monitoring systems use wood and paper materials in devices as bait to keep a check on any termite feeding near your home or building.

Termite Prevention in New Construction
For new residential or commercial construction, there are several modern construction techniques used to prevent termite infestation.

Soil treatments with proper chemicals and insecticides can be placed underneath a foundation before the slab is laid. Every part of the subsoil where the foundation is to be laid should be treated. Depending on the layout of the foundation, holes and other drillings for treatments are used. All areas where wood products will be in contact with the foundation of the building receive additional treatment.

Other pre-construction treatment includes installing a physical barrier that termites cannot penetrate between wooden parts of the building and the soil. These permanent barriers are typically made from galvanized sheet metal or sufficient layers of additional concrete.
